Since 2010 we have worked alongside communities in Ntchisi District to build protected wells, boreholes and solar-powered water systems that last.

About us

EWSFA is a Malawian non-governmental organisation working to build healthy, resilient communities through safe water, sanitation, health and sustainable livelihoods.

Founded in Ntchisi District in 2010, we work alongside communities, local authorities and partners so that the water points, latrines, clinics and gardens we build together keep working long after a project closes.

Frequently asked questions

The Environment, Water and Sanitation Foundation and Associates (EWSFA) is a local Malawian NGO founded in Ntchisi District in 2010 and formally registered in 2012. We work on WASH, environmental management, One Health, maternal and child health, climate resilience, agricultural livelihoods, HIV/AIDS mitigation and governance — always alongside the communities and local authorities concerned.

Yes. EWSFA is registered under the Trustees Incorporation Act of 1962 with the Registrar General of Malawi (TR/INC 5488), the Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA, C869/2015) and the NGO Regulatory Authority (NGO L/20/056). We also hold an active DUNS number (561232219), an NCAGE code (SFCV9) and an active SAM registration.

Our field presence is centred on Ntchisi District in the Central Region of Malawi, including the Traditional Authorities of Chilooko, Kalumo and Malenga. Some of our work — particularly radio-based health messaging — has reached communities well beyond the district.

Every installation is paired with a community structure that owns it. We establish and train Water Point Committees and Water Users Associations, provide borehole maintenance training, and continue to support those structures after handover. Over 95% of the water systems we have installed remain functional.

One Health recognises that human health, animal health, agriculture and the environment are connected. Instead of programming them separately, we design interventions where they reinforce each other — safe water reduces disease, gardens improve nutrition, and a protected catchment sustains the water source.

Yes. We work with government institutions, international NGOs, donors, community-based organisations and grassroots structures, and we serve as the Secretariat for the Ntchisi Non-State Actors Committee. Please get in touch through the contact page to discuss a partnership.
